Joist and Rafters
Old growth timbers come from structures such as barns, homes and factories that have stood for well over a hundred years. These buildings have become no longer usable in their present condition and instead of demolishing them to take to a landfill, we carefully disassemble them and remill the lumber into usable building products such as flooring, wall paneling etc. By using reclaimed wood that was harvested over a hundred years ago, we are lessening the damage to valuable ecosystems and reducing the destructive over harvesting of the new wood plantations and forests.
Hand Hewn
These joists and rafters were shaped by hand using an axe or “adze”, before the time of sawmills. The hard work and craftsmanship is reflected in original, rustic patina of each piece. Hewing was the process of using an axe or “adze” to make a flat surface on a log. Each hand hewn beam shows the original craftsmanship and hard work required to make each log into a usable beam for construction. Today, hand hewn beams are the most sought after look for mantels, timber frames and ceiling beam projects.
Antique Original Surface
Sawmills were introduced in the mid 1800’s to save time and money by mass producing square beams and lumber. They used large round saw blades that would leave circular saw marks on the logs. These saw marks, along with hundreds of years of “weathering”, give these beams a smoother rustic appearance.
